  • May 6, 2016

NACOGDOCHES COUNTY, TX (KTRE) –
An emotional Coach Brad Underwood announced to a group at the William R. Johnson Coliseum on Monday he submitted his resignation to the SFA Athletic Department and confirmed he’ll be heading to Oklahoma State University.

He’ll join the university in Stillwater, Oklahoma as their head men’s basketball coach.

In a 10 minute press conference he said, “it’s been a little of a whirlwind. But I was afforded the opportunity to get to a place I’m very familiar with at Stillwater, Oklahoma at Oklahoma State University. I grew up in that league and played in that league. The offer to coach there was offered to me and I accepted.”

Coach Underwood talked about his connection to the Oklahoma State University, their coaching staff and other factors convinced him to take the officer. “And to play in one of the elite and iconic buildings in all of college basketball and their fans are incredible,” said Underwood.

He told the group that it was tough to tell his SFA team on Monday. “That’s hard. I dreaded yesterday like no other and that wasn’t any easier. And I’m afforded this opportunity because of them — plain and simple,” said Underwood. “We’ve got family and that’s what I’m leaving.”

Coach Underwood said no other program contacted him to leave SFA.

“There is no question Brad has elevated our men’s basketball program, athletic department and University to a national brand,” said SFA director of athletics Robert Hill in a press release by SFA Athletic Department. “We will always be indebted to him for what he was able to accomplish. He engrained himself into the community and campus and there is no place he isn’t admired and well liked. I expect to see him accepting a national championship trophy before he completes his career. We wish him only the best.”
